Commercial Recycling
Before you talk to a recycling provider or waste hauler, there are some quick questions you should consider.
Questions to ask yourself:
- What items do we want to recycle?
- Which items will be easiest to collect?
- Which employee will be responsible for coordinating the recycling effort?
- What size recycling container/dumpster will we need?
- 64-96 gallon wheel carts are best for very small or urban businesses with limited space
- 6 - 8YD front load dumpsters are most common for small - medium businesses
- 10 – 40YD roll-off and top containers are best for temporary jobs, events, or facilities with a dock
- Where will the recycling container/dumpster be located?
Questions To Ask When Choosing a Recycling Provider
- What types of material do you accept?
- What size containers/dumpsters do you offer?
- How long are your service contracts? (2-5 years is common)
- If we have a greater amount of material than expected, how will that affect our rate?
- Can we partner with other companies in our building/facility?
- Do you charge a fine for contaminated recycling materials?
- Can you help us track the amount/weight of material we are recycling?

Rethinking Commercial Waste
Rethinking waste isn’t only about being “green”, but saving green. Consider all of your operational supplies. Is there anything you could reduce or eliminate?
- Go paperless.
- Ask employees to bring in a favorite coffee mug instead of offering Styrofoam cups or single serve ware in the breakroom.
- Have a single manager of office supply inventory to avoid over-ordering.
- Donate surplus or unwanted office items to institutions like The Welman Project.
- Dispose of weird wastes through reuse businesses like RepurposedMaterials, and Terracycle, or instiutions like the Resource Exchange Network for Eliminating Waste by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality
